Cancer Survivors Month

Is Elder Abuse Getting Worse

Cancer Survivors Month

June is Cancer Survivors Month. People are considered cancer survivors from the time of their first diagnosis and are considered one for the rest of their life. As of January 2022, there are approximately 18.1 million cancer survivors in the United States, which is around 5.4 percent of the population. The amount of cancer survivors is also expected to grow. It is expected to increase by 24.4 percent to 22.5 million cancer survivors in 2032. It is also expected that over the next decade, the number of people who have lived 5 or more years after their cancer diagnosis will increase by 30 percent to 16.3 million.

Cancer survivors need support after their battle with cancer. There are multiple ways to support them. The first thing you can do is take long term side effects seriously. Many people suffer from fatigue, pain, insomnia, and difficulties concentrating or remembering during cancer treatment. They can also become depressed or irritable. Planning activities can be great but expect only a certain level of activity. It is also important to understand that there is fear of cancer coming back. Speaking with them could help alleviate some fears. You should also listen without trying to fix everything. Letting them feel heard could go a long way in helping those struggling after cancer. Instead of asking what you can do, something that can be done to help those dealing with cancer is offer to do something for them. It is also important to watch for warning signs of suicide since cancer survivors are at a higher risk of suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is best to seek help if a loved one is struggling to function on a daily basis, withdraws socially, or cannot find pleasure in things that once made them happy.

Cancer Survivors Month is a great way to honor those struggling with cancer. Cancer Survivor’s Month is also a great way to highlight the struggles people with cancer face on a daily basis. Knowing about physical, emotional, mental, social, and financial challenges can help people help those struggling with cancer. It is also a great way to garner support for research, which could create new treatments, improve care, and could lead to fewer lives affected by cancer. Cancer Survivors Month also gives hope to those struggling with cancer. Hearing stories from survivors and seeing that people have survived cancer can help those struggling with cancer see that there could be a life after their cancer diagnosis.
