PANCREATIC CANCER AND DIABETES DRUGS

Recent studies have caused researchers to become concerned that patients who take certain drugs to treat their diabetes have an increased risk of developing cancer of the pancreas. The drugs at issue are Januvia, Victoza, Byetta, and Onglyza, among others. These drugs are used to control blood sugar in patients with Type 2 diabetes. They do this by increasing insulin production by the pancreas and slowing absorption of food. Research has shown that these drugs can cause inflammation of the pancreas as well as pre-cancerous changes to cells in the pancreas. This can lead to changes in the tissue of the pancreas which can trigger the development of pancreatic cancer. If you or a loved one have developed pancreatic cancer and take or have taken drugs to treat diabetes, please contact us.
