November Is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Exposure to asbestos can cause severe and life-threatening illnesses such as lung cancer. November is national lung cancer awareness month and if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with lung cancer and were exposed to asbestos, you may be entitled to compensation.

Lung cancer was the first cancer to be linked to asbestos exposure. When asbestos fibers become airborne, they are easier to inhale and can become trapped inside the lung. As the fibers work themselves deeper into the tissue of the lungs, the infected areas develop inflammation and scarring. The once normal cells begin to change and cluster together ultimately forming tumors in the lung. As the cancer cells continue to grow and multiply, the surrounding healthy tissue becomes more damaged and the organs cease to function properly. These tumors can also spread to other parts of the body, by way of the bloodstream, or the lymph, which is the natural fluid that surrounds the lung tissue.

Lung cancer resulting from asbestos exposure kills as many as 10,000 Americans each year. Those who smoke, or who have smoked may believe that their cancer is solely because of tobacco use; however, it is important to know that smoking and asbestos exposure go hand in hand. Asbestos exposure increases the risk in smokers of developing lung cancer five more times over smoking alone. Smokers and those who have smoked in the past are not exempt from receiving compensation if they have been exposed to asbestos and have been diagnosed with lung cancer.

When Should I Contact An Attorney?
If you believe you have been diagnosed with an asbestos related illness such as lung cancer, you should speak with an attorney as soon as possible because depending on the state, there are time limits as to when you can file a lawsuit. Once you report your case to the attorney, the attorney will then decide whether or not you have a case for asbestos exposure. At Goldberg, Persky & White, P.C., (GPW) the consultation is free. In fact, we only take compensation if your case is won and damages have been paid.

While today asbestos and asbestos products are heavily regulated, asbestos is still used throughout the United States and asbestos violations do still occur. Asbestos does not pose a threat if it is undisturbed and properly handled; however, many have no way of knowing if their home, office, or even school contains the carcinogen. Contact as asbestos expert if you suspect asbestos contamination. If you or a loved one has been exposed to asbestos and have been diagnosed with lung cancer, make sure to contact the experienced attorneys at Goldberg, Persky & White.  Our attorneys are committed to fighting for the compensation you deserve.  Contact us today to speak with our experts.
