Asbestos Abatement Can Help Prevent Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer

Finding asbestos in the home can be quite scary because it can cause mesothelioma, lung, throat, esophageal, and colorectal cancers. Once encountering asbestos, it is easy to disturb the hazardous material and inhale dangerous asbestos fibers. One way to prevent asbestos from being a danger to your family is to use asbestos abatement companies to safely take asbestos away from the home. Trained professionals can come, assess the situation, and properly remove the carcinogenic substance without endangering your family. If you buy an older home or have been living in an older home and want to protect yourselves from asbestos exposure, consider getting a home inspection and finding an asbestos abatement company to check for asbestos in your home.

Asbestos was used in many different products because of its heat and fire-resistant properties. If you find asbestos, it is best to leave it alone because disturbing it could release millions of easily inhalable microscopic fibers. If you decide to have asbestos removed, the abatement contractors will first test the materials for asbestos. They will then determine if it is safe to remove the materials. Removal of asbestos is usually a last resort because removing asbestos can cause fibers to become airborne.

If there are damaged asbestos materials in your home, they can be removed or repaired. Repair involves either encapsulation or enclosure. Encapsulation works by coating the asbestos materials with a sealant that prevents fibers from escaping while enclosure works by wrapping materials with an airtight material. Asbestos removal is a more involved process. First the area is sealed off to prevent fibers from going to other areas with seals being double checked to ensure the area is safe. HEPA filters and exhaust ducts are used to clean the air while asbestos is being removed. Protective clothing and respirators are worn by workers and the area where they work is tightly secured so people cannot enter. Inspections occur on a regular basis throughout the removal to ensure all materials are safely removed. The asbestos material is then placed in bags that are 6 mil thick. Once everything is completed, the area is cleaned with HEPA vacuums and wiped down. The asbestos material is then disposed of in a sealed dumpster and sent to a proper disposal site that takes asbestos. These materials are accompanied with a proper DTSC certificate showing that it is properly labeled as toxic, hazardous waste. Proper waste sites need to be used so the waste is not disturbed.

Ensuring you have a home free of asbestos is a great way to prevent certain cancers like lung cancer and mesothelioma.  For some cancers to be prevented, some lifestyle changes might need to be made, but with mesothelioma, simply avoiding asbestos can be enough. Removing asbestos from your home can save the lives of future generations just by preventing them from encountering the carcinogen. If you decide to have asbestos removed, future generations will live healthier and better lives.
