Another Claire’s Makeup Product has Been Found with Asbestos.
Asbestos was discovered in tween star JoJo Siwa’s line of makeup at Claire’s, forcing the company to recall it. This is not the first time this has happened to the company. Earlier this year, asbestos was found in another Claire’s makeup product and it refused to remove it from store shelves, but later recalled it. It is easy for makeup to be contaminated with asbestos because makeup companies use talc, which can be found side by side with asbestos deposits.
As of right now, the FDA has no authority to recall products, but it can warn consumers about the dangers of them. In this case, the FDA warned consumers, and Claire’s decided to remove the products from store shelves to be cautious. The FDA is currently reviewing where cosmetic companies receive their talc and how talc in consumer products can be contaminated with asbestos.
Since EPA Chief Andrew Wheeler is dragging his feet when it comes to outright banning the substance, cosmetics manufacturers do not have to be very careful when selling their products. If an asbestos ban ever happens, it will be easier for the EPA to prevent companies from manufacturing and selling products contaminated with the carcinogen. Companies could receive fines and penalties, forcing them to be more careful when selling their products.
